Sacred soil

A cathedral in central Mexico stands in view of green hills. Mexican soil is sacred for many Hispanics and a local chapel in the East Bay will be first in the U.S. to make it available to families.

At the San Ysidro border crossing in San Diego, two members of a Mexican-American family nervously wait to re-enter the U.S. Packed in their car is a small bag containing a substance that is illegal to import into the U.S. – soil from Mexico. Border officials confiscate the soil and the travelers are allowed to continue to their home.

The family’s name is not important – their attempt and failure to bring soil from Mexico is a very common happening. It’s also very disappointing for these families as their mission is to bury their deceased family member with a tangible part of their homeland.

Tierra sagrada

Una catedral en el centro de México se mantiene de pie al frente de unas montañas verdes. La tierra mexicana es sagrada para muchos hispanos y una capilla en el Este de la Bahía será la primera en hacerla disponible para las familias en EE.UU.

En el cruce de la frontera de San Ysidro en San Diego, dos miembros de una familia mexico-estadounidense esperan nerviosos la entrada a los EE.UU. Dentro del auto que conducen hay una pequeña bolsa que contiene una sustancia que es ilegal importarla a los EE.UU. – tierra de México. Autoridades en la frontera decomisan la tierra y a los viajeros se les permite la entrada para que continúen su viaje de regreso a casa.

Partnership benefits threatened species and economic growth

Secretary of the Interior Sally Jewell recently visited the East Bay to host a discussion with East Contra Costa County community leaders about a model of collaboration known as habitat conservation plans (HCP). HCPs are agreements through which local land use agencies, landowners and other partners work with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to address long-term conservation needs, maintain local control over land use and provide flexibility to meet economic growth initiatives.

Colaboración beneficiará a especies en peligro y el crecimiento económico

La Secretaria del Interior Sally Jewell recientemente visitó el Este de la Bahía para dialogar con líderes comunitarios del Este del condado de Contra Costa sobre un modelo de colaboración conocido como planes para la conservación del hábitat (HCP por sus siglas en ingles).

“La Experiencia Eléctrica” es una iniciativa que pondrá a los residentes del Área de la Bahía en el asiento del conductor de vehículos eléctricos

La Comisión Metropolitana del Transporte (MTC), el Distrito de Administración de la Calidad del Aire y un consorcio de organizaciones relacionadas a los vehículos eléctricos lanzaron la nueva campaña para aumentar el conocimiento público de los autos eléctricos: “La Experiencia Eléctrica — El Mejor Manejo”. La iniciativa regional fue diseñada para fomentar la adopción del uso de autos eléctricos al ofrecer miles de pruebas de manejo gratuitas en decenas de eventos abiertos al público y en centros de empleo alrededor de los nueve condados del Área de la Bahía.

Diversity in action

Last year, more than 60 volunteers constructed log steps, rerouted a failed section of trail, and installed several drainage features along a trail in Roberts Regional Recreation Area, Oakland. The recreation area is part of the East Bay Regional Park District.

East Bay Parks to Host Multicultural Event

The East Bay Regional Park District will host its Multicultural Volunteer Trail Work Day on July 12th at Garin Regional Park in Hayward. The park district has held fun trail maintenance events since 1996 to encourage the community to be good stewards of the trails. Projects include pruning invasive plants and installing trail structures such as retaining walls and steps. For the past three years, the park district has actively brought together the varied ethnic communities of the Bay Area. Volunteers ranging from 15 to 70 years of age from the Latino, South Asian, Korean, Chinese and African American communities worked together in celebration of diversity, hard work, public service, and good fun.
