Students in more than 60 schools across Alameda County are walking, biking, and carpooling this month, competing in the "Pollution Solution Golden Sneaker Contest" as part of the Alameda County Safe Routes to Schools Program. The two-week contest started March 4, and encourages families to get active while reducing pollution.

"This contest motivates families to start walking or biking to school in a fun, community building way," said Alameda CTC Chair Supervisor Scott Haggerty. "It supports our efforts to reduce congestion and greenhouse gas emissions, while promoting safe access to schools."

At the end of the contest, the winning classroom in each school will receive the coveted Golden Sneaker trophy to celebrate the benefits of using active or shared transportation to get to and from school. The school with the greatest increase in green transportation modes during the contest will be honored by the Alameda County Transportation Commission at its March 28, 2013 commission meeting.

The contest is sponsored by the Alameda County Safe Routes to Schools Program, which is funded by the Alameda County Transportation Commission and the Metropolitan Transportation Commission.
