Latin jazz continues to burn hot in communities across the country because of pioneers and innovators such as the Bay Area’s own René Escovedo. Born into a legendary Latin jazz family, Rene’s passion for music and drumming was both in his DNA and his environment. With famous uncles Coke and Pete Escovedo of latin rock group Carlos Santana, and famous cousins Sheila E., Juan Escovedo, and Peter Escovedo, it’s no surprise that René began

practicing drumming when he was five years old and today has a loyal and growing following of fans.

Throughout the years, René has performed at top local venues such as the Greek Theater in Berkeley, the Fillmore in San Francisco and Yoshis Jazz Club in Oakland. His current project, René Escovedo & The Fuse, is a high energy jazz fusion, latin, soul, funk, R&B group. They are currently performing at Café Van Kleef in Oakland as well as at other clubs and restaurants in the East Bay.

“People are responding to it,” says Rene of the local response to the Fuse, which showcases multiple local artists while playing popular and original songs for everyone’s dancing and listening pleasure. “It’s all danceable, high energy, fun stuff,” he says.

René leads the group on drums and features the occasional celebrity special guest players. They’ll be playing at Raja Restaurant in Hayward on May 7th at 8:30pm. Speaking of Raja as a live music venue, René says, “A lot of people don’t utilize this venue, but I think it’s great.” Tickets for the May 7 performance are $10.
