Carnaval, the much awaited event of the year is here, for those who have worked so hard at all of the preparations as well as the spectators who come to enjoy the colors and flavors of Carnaval. Those who’ve never been to Carnaval, this is a good opportunity for a day filled with entertainment.

Presented by the San Francisco Cultural Arts Traditions, the San Francisco Carnaval is a two day festival including a grand parade and outdoor entertainment on Memorial Day weekend. It is California’s largest annual multicultural celebration. The event will showcase a true multicultural diversity in a form of costumes, food, live music, dancing and exotic artistry.

The tradition started in Precita Park in the San Francisco’s Mission District three decades ago as a need for people to experience the cultural celebrations of their motherlands. Almost every single participant works on this project as a volunteer, including the preparation of each float, the performances and customs.

There is no fee to attend the parade and all festivities. The admission is free; however contributions can be made online and inside donation boxes onsite. Grandstand seating is also available for $30.00 and can be purchased online as well.

Each year more and more members of different cultures participate in this grand event - it is a family multicultural event where you will find people from all over the world.

The San Francisco Carnaval Festival takes place this Saturday, May 26 and Sunday May 27 (Memorial Day Weekend) from 10:00am to 6:00pm at Harrison St. Between 16th and 23rd streets in San Francisco. Please note that the Grand Parade is on Sunday May 27 at 9:30 am, beginning at Bryant and 24th, from 24th it goes North on Mission to 17th.
