Free advice on budgeting, retirement planning, income taxes  ---

Oakland Mayor Jean Quan, State Senator Loni Hancock, State Assemblymember Sandre Swanson and the Bay Area Financial Planning Association will host a one-day workshop providing local residents with free financial planning advice and guidance on Saturday, October 1 from 9 am to 4 pm at Oakland City Hall, 1 Frank H. Ogawa Plaza. The Oakland event is the first of a series of similar events organized by the national Financial Planning Days Initiative.

“Given the ongoing recession, many Oaklanders could use professional guidance on how to handle their financial challenges,” said Oakland Mayor Jean Quan. “This is an important public service and we are honored to be joining the Financial Planning Association and its partners in making these services available to our residents.”

The workshop features experts from the Financial Planning Association® and highly qualified CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™professionals, all volunteering their time and expertise to work with local residents one-on-one to address important financial issues. Financial planners will meet with attendees to answer questions on getting out of debt, retirement planning, investment strategies, income taxes, insurance, mortgages and foreclosures, and many other topics. Spanish translation will be available.

“The event is an opportunity to sit down face to face with dozens of professional financial planners to discuss and ask all kind of questions that people may have about their personal finance challenges,” said Frank Paré, government relations director for the Financial Planning Association of East Bay.

“If you lost your job, have credit issues, looking for a better way for retirement, this event is the opportunity to talk with many professional financial experts,” adds Paré. “The event will have between fifty and hundred 100 experts providing free advice, which will be offered on a “no strings attached” basis - experts will not give out business cards or sell financial products or services.”
In addition to personalized advice, Oakland Financial Planning Day will also feature a series of classroom-style 50-minute educational workshops on topics such as foreclosure, financial planning, credit repair, and how small biz owners can obtain credit, among other.

Oakland’s Financial Planning Day is organized by City of Oakland in partnership with FPA of the East Bay as part of a national Financial Planning Days initiative created by Certified Financial Planner Board of Standards, Financial Planning Association, Foundation for Financial Planning and the U.S. Conference of Mayors.

Parking for the event will be at the Dalziel Building (250 Frank H. Ogawa Plaza), Clay Street Garage (entrance on Clay Street between 14th and 16th), and City Center Garage (entrance on 11th Street between Clay Street and Broadway). Nearest BART Station located at 12th Street and Oakland City Center.
