San Francisco man on epic journey to Mexico

What is your impossible? That is the challenge of a 6,000 mile journey that Diego Gonzalez Joven, 26, is currently taking down the West coast of North America. Diego and fellow adventurer Rachael Scdoris have already pedaled their special tandem bike several thousand miles from Alaska, through Canada and down the U.S. coast. They recently crossed the border into Mexico and are cycling to Los Cabos in Baja California Sur. Diego will then swim

a 180 miles across the Sea of Cortez to Mazatlan where he and Rachael will begin cycling across Mexico. Cancun is their finish line.

Diego says that the goal of the expedition is to inspire people. “To prove to people that nothing is impossible as long as one commits to their goals,” writes Diego on his website, www.whatsyourimpossible.com.

Diego and Rachael recently updated their friends and supporters about their journey: “The ride from San Francisco down the coastal highway has been a unique ride through big cities, forest, farm country and beaches populated with elephant seals, whales, deer and fellow cyclists also touring around California.

Although the roads have been hilly and our average speed has ranged from the 9 to 11mph these long rides along the California coast seem like our reward for sticking with the expedition despite all of the issues that we dealt with, early on, with the support vehicle, etc. Every morning we wake up to the sound of the waves crashing against the massive cliffs and the salty smell of the ocean. We have come across many farms and fruit stands and have taken every opportunity to stop, to sample strawberries or fill the shelves of our trailer with organic vegetables.

It was pouring rain when we left San Francisco but in the past few days the wind has been at our back and the weather has been mild. Our physical condition has increased exponentially…”

In addition to inspiring and motivating people to achieve their own dreams, Diego is using the trip to encourage people to live a sustainable way of life by using renewable energy and materials whenever possible. An example is their bike, which is made of bamboo, a fact that impresses people everywhere the couple rides.

Born in Mexico City, Diego has traveled to all seven continents, climbing mountains, cycling on open roads, and swimming across deep waters. In 2007 he travelled on a 22,000-mile expedition from the North Pole to the South Pole.

At the time you read this, Diego and Rachael will have coordinated the logistics of a boat to assist the Sea of Cortes swim. Fortunately, the Mexican Coast Guard bureau has offered their support for the swim, which will eliminate several challenges for Diego.

On their final online entry, they write, “We are very excited to complete this beautiful leg of the expedition, meet more interesting people and see what challenges await us in Mexico.”
