Monument honoring heroes unveiled in Oakland

Local hero Carmen Flores among those immortalized in bronze  --- 

Remember Them: Champions for Humanity, a world-class monument featuring 25 humanitarians, was installed and unveiled in a public ceremony in Oakland on Tuesday, Sept. 6, 2011. Humanitarians Maya Angelou and Ruby Bridges attended the ceremony along with family members of other heroes honored. The massive bronze sculpture honors people such as Rev. Martin Luther King Jr., Mother Teresa, Chief Joseph, and Nelson Mandela.

El Museo USS Hornet de Alameda es un tesoro histórico que ha evolucionado hasta llegar a ser un lugar de aprendizaje práctico donde los estudiantes aprenden sobre historia, ciencia, tecnología y matemáticas. Entre los programas educativos que se ofrecen en el veterano porta-aviones de guerra se encuentra el programa STEM (Ciencia, Tecnología, Ingeniería, Matemáticas), que brinda a las escuelas locales la oportunidad no sólo de vivir de primera mano una experiencia histórica, sino también de aprender cómo la ciencia, las matemáticas y la tecnología juegan un papel importante en las actividades cotidianas a bordo de un enorme navío.

The USS Hornet Museum in Alameda is a historical treasure that has evolved into a hands-on learning place where students learn about history, science, technology and math. Among the educational programs offered at the war veteran aircraft carrier is STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics), which provides the opportunity for local schools to not only experience history firsthand, but also learn how science, math and technology all play a vital role in the day-to-day activities aboard the massive ship.

Synopsis: Since 1995, the federal government has spent nearly $40 billion and provided trillions of dollars worth of insurance guarantees to lenders to promote homeownership, especially among communities of color. The infusion of money boosted homeownership rates slightly over the decades, but the ongoing national foreclosure crisis is wiping out all of those gains.
