Hayward police to buy guns from public

On Saturday, October 30, residents of Hayward can sell their guns to the Hayward Police Department for $50 each. Rick Blanton, crime prevention specialist for the city, is heading the annual gun exchange program, which has purchased about 780 guns during the last ten years. Similar to gun purchase programs in other cities, police will ask no questions to people bringing their guns for purchase.  “And it has to be a working gun,” states Blanton, who adds that the

México celebra como es costumbre anual el Día de los Muertos los últimos días de octubre y a principios de noviembre. Esta celebración es toda una fiesta, llena de colores y motivos alegres que refieren a la muerte, pero a la muerte desde otra perspectiva. Con la herencia de la cultura indígena, los latinoamericanos que festejan el Día de los Muertos aprovechan esta ocasión para acercarse a sus queridos difuntos y celebrar la vida.

La Ciudad de Oakland recientemente formuló una petición que buscaba un mandato judicial en contra de la pandilla callejera denominada Norteños, misma que es clasificada por la oficina del Fiscal Municipal como una de las pandillas más violentas en la ciudad.

Oakland and Hayward target violent gangs

The City of Oakland recently filed a petition seeking an injunction against the Norteños street gang, which the City Attorney’s office states is one of the most violent gangs in the city. The City of Hayward is also taking steps to introduce new laws to reduce crime and violence committed by an estimated 2,000 street gang members representing more than twenty gangs or groups.

Job opportunities for young people are what public education should be about, says Monica Tell. The long-time Oakland resident is campaigning for the Trustee Area 3 seat on the Peralta Community College Board of Trustees in the November 2nd general election.

Peralta trustees were recently the subject of a critical report by the Alameda County Grand Jury that cited the lack of fiscal controls, mismanagement, interference in hiring decisions and cronyism. “It’s so bad the colleges are threatened with loss of accreditation,” says Tell.
