“My advice is not to get pregnant when you’re still in school – you should get your life together before you bring another person into the world,” says Edalid Berumen. The 17 year-old mother’s understanding of life today is very different than it was when she got pregnant at the age of 15. Once her baby Cynthia was born, Edalid thought she was on her way to being a high-school dropout.

Eduardo Martinez is a 19 year old who moved from Nicaragua by himself in March of 2007. Martinez came to the US to achieve his long time dream to have a good education and to obtain a PhD or Masters degree.

This mental challenge is a reality for everyone, though it can be a greater challenge for Hispanic youth, especially those who have no family member who has already taken the path of higher education and a professional career.
